To conform to my Lovin’ the Earth theme this month, I’m listing …

Five ^EASY^ Things EVERYONE should be doing for our Earth.

If you aren’t doing all of these things, then let’s start, okay? Like, as in today! These are the minimum requirements of being a responsible human in regards to our environment in my opinion.

  1. RECYCLE! Recycling is easy. It’s just throwing your trash away, but in a different bin. Instead of tossing that piece of paper into your standard trash can, place a bin next to that normal trash can and toss it in that one. In our home, we don’t have room for full sized recycling bins in our kitchen, so we have a bin that we toss our recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastics, cans, glass) into. When that bin gets full, one of us takes it to the garage and sorts the paper into the blue one and dumps the rest into the green one. Of course, your bins may be different colors, you may not have to separate at all – my point is that this is an IMPORTANT thing we ALL need to be doing AND it’s not hard. In fact, it’s easy peasy, doesn’t cost a thing and only takes up an additional few moments of your time.
  2. Use Environment Friendly Cleaning Products. Coming from a clean freak, these products clean just as good or better without the harsh effects on your lungs or our earth. You don’t have to buy the most expensive stuff, there are some great (sometimes cheaper) natural cleaning products out there that will not bust your budget.
  3. REUSE! That pretty shoebox your new sandals came in: use it for all those crayons/markers/colored pencils. That pickle jar you just finished off? Peel the label and wash that bad boy. Glass jars come in handy for all sorts of things! Use instead of tupperware, make decorative candle containers on the holidays, hold all your Sharpies, toothbrush holder… the list could go on forever and I’m just talking about what I’ve used them for. Pickle jars are one of my favorites, but start to pay attention to what’s under those labels next time you go to toss a jar in your recycle bin. My very favorite stylish vase was a Sake bottle in it’s past life. :)
  4. UPCYCLE! Reuse some of your old things, to make new things. Take old t-shirts and make easy peasy t-shirt dresses and/or tank tops for the girls in your life (including you – I use this tutorial & these are so much fun!) If said t-shirt is too old and ratty for a cute upcycle, tear it up and use it for a cleaning rag. Take apart that Easter art project and reuse some of the pieces in your next project. And don’t forget about hand me downs! Also buying used stuff fits into this category: books are my favorite to buy used. Sooo cheap – at the library you can get a Dr. Seuss hardcover classic for only $1 !!

  5. REDUCE YOUR CARBON EMISSIONS! Choose at least one of the following: Eat less meat, Cut out the fast food/carry out with all those foam packages, Buy locally grown foods, Use public transportation, Walk/ride your bike to places within a mile (on a nice day), sell that gas guzzler and get something more fuel efficient. Oooh! If there was an electric minivan that could hold my crew and I could afford it – I’d be the first one to line up to get that sucka. Pumping gas sucks and my bank account hates it, too.

I’m sure I’m missing something… what is one thing you do that you think EVERYONE should be doing to make a cleaner earth?

xo, Tabi :D
